The Sweetgrass Festival exists to help preserve the heritage, legacy and traditions of the Gullah Geechee culture and their sweetgrass basket making art form. The Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival serves as a venue to bring focus and attention to the declining natural habitat locations where basket makers harvest the sweetgrass needed to produce their art form.
200 Pomegranates and an Audience of One by Shawn Wood draws on the story of obscure Old Testament figure Huram of Tyre, an artist putting the finishing touches on Solomon’s temple. He honed his craft and contributed something of beauty and excellence, though some of his most detailed and time-consuming work was more than thirty feet off the ground, where few people would notice its intricacies.
Shawn uses the story of Huram of Tyre to show us our immense potential to develop our God-given talents and contribute something that makes a difference in the world, be it through construction or counseling, doing people’s taxes carefully and ethically, or raising and teaching children.
This is the first book cover I have designed for a publishing company. The final version was my 7th revision. I originally started with very light colors for version #1. The color scheme did not work at all. Version #2 brought about the color scheme you see on the final book cover. The final photo of the pomegranate came about in version #3. It was decided that the original photo of the pomegranate looks to much like caviar. I still like version #2 the best. Version #4-#7 were minor tweaks to title alignment and shading. The spine and the back cover were designed by the publishing company.
Since this book is focuses on how we are all artists, I was asked to make the inside of the book have an artist feel. Honestly this was a real challenge for me and I am not convenienced I did a surpurb job. Since the cover had a photo of a pomegranate, I took the original photo into photoshop and used the treshold tool to make it black and white. I think took the photo into Illustrator and did a live trace to make it into vector art. Part of the interior design included coming up with all the fonts and layout for the book.
The book released in 2008. It is a very good read and I highly recommended it… especially if you feel like God hasn’t given you a calling or if you feel like you have an insignificant job. It is a quick read, which worked out great for me because I have a really hard time getting through nonfiction books.
